And we have a winner!

This Saturday, Hubby and I had the one ultrasound we are planning to have. It's a good thing this little one looks normal and healthy because it is the only peak we are going to take. (And no, we are not posting photos of our 20wk fetus.) Before that though, I think it is so curious that Friday night our little one was really kicking/punching like never before. Hubby was actually able to feel it through my tummy. We just sat there amazed, laughing.

Saturday morning, this little one was in top form for his first physical exam, via ultrasound. Yes, it's a him ("That's not a 3rd foot!", per the radiologist). Hubby was ecstatic; if we had a girl, he was already planning to send her to the convent by age 5. For me, a daughter and a sister to a sister, I always (for some strange reason) assumed I would mother girls. I just don't know what to do with little boys. I dread the gun/power ranger/ spider man stuff. Then there is boy puberty, football, and dirty boy socks...yuck. But then I realized that almost all of my midwife colleagues that graduated with me had baby boys. And how cute, impressive, and wonderful they seem. Then of course there is my husband, the most gentle, wonderful, funny person I know. He passed through that...and I love him. (He also said that we will save money on clothes, probably true. These boys can run around in the same rotation of tshirts and shorts and it seems like no one notices.)

So then Sunday, we made our first baby purchase. We have always planned to cloth diaper our baby. It comes from the desire to be responsible stewards to the environment, the desire to be frugal, and also an awareness of the scary chemicals that can be found in many disposable diapers. I have been watching craigslist and a local kids gear Facebook lately and came across a motherload of cloth diapers. This military spouse lady was selling tons of different sizes and styles of cloth diapers. For those of you who haven't cloth diapered in oh, the last 15 years, things have changed! There are so many styles, set-ups, and options that it is overwhelming for new parents. They can range in price (new) from $10-$50 per diaper. (And this is supposed to save money. Apparently when you do the math it does, especially if you buy second hand diapers). So anyhow, we hung out at this lady's house for over an hour while she very enthusiastically shared with us what she liked, didn't like, tried, etc. about her cloth diapers. We made out with what I consider to be a good starter stash. We'll start with these, see what we like, what we don't, and go on from there. Pictured above are some of the cuter covers we picked out, a giraffe one and a Hawaiian print. It's fun to imagine our little guy wiggling around in these.
