Baby budget

In our efforts to have a baby on a budget and avoid buying unnecessary baby clutter, I'm keeping a tab of baby-related costs below. Prenatal care, labs, and other expenses including items bought for baby and pregnancy (ie: maternity clothes). If YOU have suggestions for ways to save, please leave a comment below.

$88 Maternity clothes: a friend was generous enough to lend me her belly band so I'm hoping to save all of my pants with that. I did just order some tops and dresses from Old Navy and Gap. I limited myself to nursing tops, hoping I'll wear them for the next year.  In all, 8 tops/dresses for $88 with shipping. Of those clothes ordered, 3 shirts were sent back...too giant.
So about $65 on clothes

$30 Prenatal vitamins - yep, went to the local health food store for the vegetarian food-based vitamin. Refills ordered through Amazon.com for $16

$0 Prenatal check-ups, insurance plus perks of being a midwife, free care from my colleagues.

$150 Starter stash of cloth diapers

$5 giant alphabet puzzle mat off of craigslist, in great condition, btw.

$0 Ultrasound - one screening ultrasound, covered by insurance.

$0 Car seat with 2 bases and stroller base, gift from God-parents

$10 starter stash of books, baby clothes, and burp cloths (cloth diaper inserts) from a moving away mom on craigslist

$0 medela swing breast pump (on loan from family member)

$0 boppy pillow (on loan from family member)

$27 2-wet bags for cloth diapers, 4 sets of clips to convert tanks/bras into nursing tanks/bras

Total: $287 (Updated 3/26/13)
