8 weeks, 4 countries, many "rules" broken

In the first 8 weeks, our embryo has been to France, Germany, Japan, and back to Guam. "Emby" has sampled rich French cheese and pates, sips of fine French wines, nibbled tasty sashimi in Sapporo, and even swam in an outdoor hot spring tub. "Are you trying to screw things up?" some may ask. Well, Japanese women eat sushi through out pregnancy and sit in the warm outdoor springs. While there last weekend, I shared the outdoor springs with snowflakes and many naked Japanese women with their young children, some of them babies. I don't understand how soaking in a warm tub for a short time is different from the hot showers I take each morning, or the occasional reading in the sun on the beach on a hot day. And if Japanese women have been doing it for eons, why would it be different for me?

The cheese thing. Has anyone ever heard of anyone contracting listeriosis, and during pregnancy? The wine thing...I think we all know the answer to that one. Women need to figure out how to have their pregnancy their way. What changes they feel are important given the information available to them. I, for example, feel that a vegetarian diet (except the occasional low-mercury fish) is right for me and provides all of the nutrition necessary.

"Rules" aside, thus far the first trimester has been pretty swell. I've noticed occasional nausea, mostly when my stomach is empty. As a result I've been eating tons of carbs (toast, cheerios, pasta). Fatigue has been a big surprise. Midway through the day I could just put my head down on my desk and fall asleep. The insomnia didn't last long. I think it was a combo of jet lag and excitement. And thirst! I'm not a big "drink 8 glasses of water daily" kind of person. But boy have I been thirsty. So onward to weeks nine and ten!
